Sometimes we put such crazy expectations on ourselves.
We’re going to Christmas school all month long and make paper chains and paper snowflakes. We’re going to thread popcorn and cranberries into Christmas garland. We’re going to send beautiful Christmas cards with handwritten notes to all the relatives who live far away. We’re going to decorate Christmas cookies to Make. Those. Memories. We’re going to drive around and look at lights and sing Christmas carols, and have a great time…even if it kills us! We’re going to throw the very best Christmas party every for our homeschool group. We’re going to sit back and sweat bullets while we watch our little ones in the Christmas pageant say the lines we rehearsed so faithfully.
We’re. Going. To. Be. Exhausted.
If homeschooling through the holidays is making you crazy, ask yourself how many of those crazy expectations do we put on ourselves? Ask yourself why you’re doing whatever it is you’re doing this season. Ask yourself what’s really most important. Ask yourself where you can cut back.
And then cut back on those expectations, expectation we put on ourselves. But if we put them on ourselves, we can also take them off…just like we take off our coats when we come in from the cold.
It sounds so simple, but sometimes it feels so hard sometimes to just stop.
Truly. We understand.
But give it a try. Say “No, we have other plans” or “we won’t be able to do that this year.” Practice saying it in a mirror.
And then give yourself permission to rest—to NOT be crazy—to relax and enjoy the peace of the season.
Happy Christmas!
